<p>I have mixed feelings about Twitter.I was told by many friends that I was “stuck on stupid” in the Stone Age and just had to start using Twitter.com to get into the real new world. I took a very good class on Twitter and set out to share my goings-on with the waiting world. I was told that I should strive to get as many people following me, and I, in turn, should follow them and read their 140-character impulsive thoughts because they would be reading mine. I also read that using Twitter could help my business grow if people get to like me.So I started “tweeting” but could not bring myself to confess to total strangers that, as a successful businessman, I had time to share that my grass is growing.I’ve been using Twitter for awhile now, and I must confess that in reading other people’s tweets, what I’ve found is that a whole lot of people have a whole lot of time on their hands and want me to know that they are enjoying a cup of coffee somewhere or that they’re stuck in traffic (and tweeting this important information while they’re driving… hmm, I see a new traffic law coming).It also does not seem to be two-way communication but rather a narcissistic “Look at me, and what I’m doing” one-way street. I very rarely see anyone respond or comment on others’ tweets, they just keep telling others about themselves.I kept thinking, “Maybe I am Stone-Age stupid – I don’t get this.” Well, this week I read a Reuters report: “Many Twitters are quick quitters.” The article reports data that questions the long-term success of the latest social networking sensation used by celebrities from Oprah Winfrey to Britney Spears. President Obama used Twitter during last year’s campaign.Sounds like the new wave, but data from Nielsen Online, which measures Internet traffic, found that more than 60 percent of Twitter users stopped using the free social networking site a month after joining. “Twitter’s audience retention rate, or the percentage of a given month’s users, who come back the following month, is currently about 40 percent,” David Martin, Nielsen Online’s vice president of primary research, said. “For most of the past 12 months, pre-Oprah, Twitter has languished below 30 percent retention.”It has enjoyed a recent explosion in popularity on the back of celebrities such as actor Ashton Kutcher and Oprah Winfrey, among countless others, who’ve sung its praises and sent out “tweets,” alerting followers to breaking news or the sender’s sometimes-mundane activities. Twitter, as a private company, does not disclose the number of its users but according to Nielsen Online, Twitter’s website had more than 7 million unique visitors in February compared to 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008. But Martin said a retention rate of 40 percent will limit a site’s growth to a 10 percent reach figure over the longer term. “There simply aren’t enough new users to make up for defecting ones after a certain point,” he said. Martin said the more-established social networking sites Facebook and MySpace enjoyed retention rates that were twice as high and those rates only rose when they went through their explosive growth phases. Both currently have retention rates of about 70 percent, with Facebook having about 200 million users. “Twitter has enjoyed a nice ride over the last few months, but it will not be able to sustain its meteoric rise without establishing a higher level of user loyalty,” said Martin. My conclusions so far:Starting out on Twitter is like using a spoon to carve a steak. It might work but you need more utensils to work effectively. I have discovered that there are a great many tools out there to make Twitter more effective, like Twellow, Twellowhood, Tweetstat,Twitterfriends, Twitpwr, Twtpic, TweetBeep and more. But you need the time and desire to learn how to use each of them to get the most out of Twitter.Twitter is a fad. It’s great for celebrities, but don’t for a minute think that they are following you back. Okay, I confess that I do want to have a million adoring fans following ME, just like Oprah, hanging on my every thought to make their lives more complete and then rushing out to buy my book, “PUSHING WATER UPHILL With A Rake.”But back in the real world I have no illusions that if I am following 5,000 people –and don’t have time to read their comings and goings – that they are all following me or caring about what I’m doing or not doing. I think Twitter might have value if used in conjunction with other networking media. Successful Internet networking needs to be more related to personal networking and less about chatter. I have found success with smaller sub-groups on Twitter that have shared values and geography, including the Denver Twitter Connection. These types of groups are twittering within Twitter, much like groups on Facebook. So for now, I’m not a Twitter quitter, but I’m certainly not a fan. <p>I&#8217;m in the Twitter fanclub. It&#8217;s easy when the way we communicate is surpassing print media and tip-toeing past television&#8230; but for now, many of us get our news and info via social media. I discovered the Michael Jackson tragedy via Twitter. I stay informed by following local news outlets, journalists and other notables. We share this information with those around us, we build a network, we instantly communicate.It makes perfect sense to me, and unfortunately the &#8220;What are you doing?&#8221; tagline just barely scratches the surface of uses for the true fans. It&#8217;s about informing, sharing and building relationships&#8230; not just a &#8220;waiting in line at Starbucks&#8221; update every now and then. </p>
<p>The example above breaks many of my personal Twitter rules. First, it smells a lot like Spam. </p>
<p>This is probably one of my (and 98% of the world&#8217;s) biggest online pet peeves. Do not say the same thing over and over again. If it is your goal to follow thousands of people hoping for a reciprocal follow and your only updates are &#8220;Try my free e-book! http://blahblahblah.com&#8221; &#8211; no one is going to follow you back. At least not anyone that&#8217;s actually going to care about your message.If a tree fails in a secluded forest and no one is around, does it really make a noise? The same goes for your message. Quality is always better than quantity. </p>
<p>There are many websites out there that boast they can get you hundreds or thousands of follows. And yes, they probably will inflate your follower count, but what good will it do you if they&#8217;re not listening? </p>
<p>Some are free and some ask for money so you can become a &#8220;VIP&#8221; and get even more. But think about it&#8230; what good will it do you to have a bunch of people that signed up for this for the same reason you did? Most tweeps that use these tactics are only in it for some sort of personal or financial gain and are just hoping for more people to download that e-book or go to their website. These aren&#8217;t the type of followers that will interact with you or be of value to your product or purpose.If you want a bunch of followers in a few days then you&#8217;re probably on Twitter for the wrong reasons (remember that whole relaionship building thing?).For a genuine audience: </p>
<p>I understand that some days you may not have anything interesting to talk about or share&#8230; and that&#8217;s completely alright! Just don&#8217;t ruin that nice silence with a boring update that your followers will feel that they wasted 7 seconds of their day reading. Don&#8217;t feel obligated to make 5 updates a day or even 5 in a week if you don&#8217;t have anything of value to talk about. </p>
<p>Another thing that I see that urks me are batches of tweets. I dislike it when my Tweetdeck suddenly bursts five tweets from the same person because they&#8217;ve scheduled them. This goes against my next point of trying to remain human. </p>
<p>Your followers will appreciate you more if you&#8217;re sparse and informative than frequent and most boring. </p>
<p>I&#8217;m less likely to follow someone with the googley-eyed brown avatar. I immediately interpret that as someone that doesn&#8217;t really care very much about being on Twitter. I generally check out every person that follows me to see if I want to reciprocate&#8230; This is always a big turn off.Secondly, make sure you have some sort of bio or info about you or why you&#8217;re tweeting. Leaving the bio section blank makes people think you&#8217;re a bot. Combine that with the default picture and you have no human characteristics whatsoever.Finally, don&#8217;t be afraid to show some personality (for those tweeting for business). Customers like to know that there&#8217;s a person behind the brand. </p>
<p>Just like anything else, you&#8217;re going to have to give a little to get back. If you expect people to click on your links, retweet you, reply, and even follow you&#8230; realize that they&#8217;re probably not going to do any of these until you make the first move! </p>
<p>Twitter reminds me of dating in middle school &#8211; most are scared to make the first move, self-conscious and scared of being judged. So, if you want things to happen you&#8217;ll have to buck up and move in for the kiss (or tweet). Remember, you&#8217;re following someone because you find them moderately interesting, so why not share something they posted by retweeting (simly put a RT before their name and message). If you&#8217;re lucky they&#8217;ll send you a quick thanks and maybe reciprocate down the road. And look! You&#8217;ve made a friend, not just a follower! </p>
<p>If you continuously throw links and self-promotion at your followers, they&#8217;re probably not going to want to help you out. </p>

<p>Whether you prefer to call yourself a doctor or physician, you may be wondering if Twitter is for you. Everybody is talking about twitter but is there anything in there for you – the busy doctor? Can Twitter help your practice, can Twitter bring more business, improve patient loyalty and raise your stature in the community? </p>
<p>Well let’s step back and see what physicians with thriving practices have done over time. Besides keeping themselves abreast of current drugs and research, they have maintained an excellent relationship with their patients. Some have done it through newsletters while others make their staff call patients periodically just to check on them. Some mail birthday cards and season greetings to their patients. </p>
<p>In today’s world though, there are a lot more intriguing options. What if a doctor’s office becomes a micro publishing house, scours newspapers, journals and research publications, extract relevant news / findings, compile them and send them to their patients. Patients will get fresh and relevant content and will be very appreciative of the good doctor. That will be perfect but can you imagine the resources that will take. Even if you limit yourself to a staff of two or three for this purpose plus the relevant hardware and software, you are talking about $9,000 to $10,000 a month. Add it up and that is $108,000 to $120,000 a year, a significant chunk of change even if you have a thriving practice. </p>
<p>What if you could do all of that for just a fraction of the cost? What the book ‘Long John Twitter’ explains in great length, you can use five or six different applications and blend them together to: </p>

<p>In summary, you need to seriously consider Twitter as a tool to keep your patients healthier, informed and more trusting of you. Twitter can grow your practice. </p>
